As tax season approaches, you may be seeking information regarding your Mainvest investments. At the beginning of the year, Mainvest will provide information that may be useful in filling out a 1099-INT if needed but will not provide tax advice or documents to investors nor to issuers. Consult a tax professional for specific questions.

Reporting Interest Income

Most investment opportunities on Mainvest are debt securities called revenue sharing notes. Thus, investors may be interested specifically in reporting interest income. More information on reporting interest income can be found here.

At the beginning of the year, Mainvest will provide information that may be useful in filling out a 1099-INT if needed but will not provide tax advice or documents to investors nor to issuers.

If you received a repayment in 2023, information regarding interest vs. principal amount repaid can be found within the Annual Summary in the Portfolio section of investor dashboards.

You may receive a request from portfolio businesses to provide additional documentation for issuers to prepare tax documents. All issuers handle tax documents independently according to their internal policies and/or tax advisors, so it is possible that issuers may issue 1099-INTs, may issue 1099-INTs only at a certain level of repayment, or may not issue them at all. Mainvest does not prepare tax documents.

Equity Investments

Equity investments are handled differently than debt and are managed solely by the issuer. If you have any questions about how taxes are handled for equity investments, we encourage you to reach out to the issuer directly for more information.

Declaring Losses

If you are looking to write off a total or partial loss due to a portfolio business ceasing operations before a full repayment is made, either before or after the maturity date, please review this article.

If you have questions please do not hesitate to reach out to Mainvest support. As always, we encourage you to consult with your own tax advisor or accountant when completing taxes as we are unable to provide tax or accounting advice.
